Temporary Visa: Vitem-I

Eligibility:

  • Cultural Program.
  • Pursue scientific, technologic, or volunteer activities under the umbrella of an international cooperation program.
  • Pursue professorial studies/ research/ teaching and/or pursue scientific/ technologic activities at a university, research, or similar organization.
  • Attend school under an approved exchange student program.
  • Work as an unpaid intern benefitting from a scholarship under the umbrella of a program sponsored by a Brazilian governmental agency, an international organization, or an authorized exchange student’s institution.
  • Receive technical training in the operation and/or maintenance of machinery or equipment produced in Brazil.
  • Receive training in Brazil as an under 21-year old amateur athlete.
  • Community services and volunteering activities.
  • Traveling to Brazil for medical treatment.

Terms and Conditions:

  • Whenever the planned stay exceeds 90 days, visitors must register with the Federal Police in Brazil within 30 days from first arrival in the country, by submitting the passport along with an original visa application form that will be returned to applicant by the Consulate, once the visa is issued.
  • Visa holders are prohibited from holding any paid job in Brazil. A professor, scientist, or researcher pursuing activities at an university, research, or similar organization is allowed to be paid a "pro-labore" by a Brazilian party for short term activities. Scholarship payment by a Brazilian party is otherwise permitted.
  • For extended stays, of at least 6 months, the same type of visa may be issued to immediate family members. However, family members are prohibited from engaging in any paid activity in Brazil.
  • This visa is good for multiple entries within the visa's duration. If necessary, a visa extension may be submitted to the Federal Police in Brazil, if requested at least 30 days prior to the expiration of the authorized stay (special requirements apply).
  • For nationals from Bhutan, Central African Republic, and Taiwan visa will be issued on a "laissez-passer".
  • Brazilian nationals must enter and leave Brazil with their Brazilian passport only.

Procedures:

  • Submit (by an agency or by appointment) to the Consulate one print-out of the visa application/protocol form per applicant, duly signed by the applicant. Parents must sign for those under 18 years old and have their signatures notarized.

    • You must complete the entire application online before you are able to print out the form with your individual protocol number.
    • The visa application/protocol form is valid for only 30 days from its issuance date. After 30 days, a new protocol number must be acquired by completing a new visa application/protocol form.
  • Passport with a minimum remaining validity of six months and with at least 2 adjacent blank visa pages available for the visa stamp (excluding the pages reserved for Amendments and Endorsements).
  • One recent 2"x 2" passport-type photographs of applicant, front view and showing entire face, in white background. Snapshots, computer pictures and picture photocopies are not accepted.
  • proof of residence in the consular jurisdiction
    • A notarized copy of applicant's driver's license.
    • The applicant must have resided in our Consular Jurisdiction for the past 12 months prior to visa application.
  • If applicant is of criminally liable age, and whenever the planned stay exceeds 90 days, a recent (not over 60 days) non-criminal record issued by the local (applicant's place of residence) Police Department.
    • The document must bear either the official seal or the stamp of the issuing authority and it must subsequently be legalized by this Consulate.
  • If applying for an extended-stay visa to immediate family members, copy of marriage certificate, birth certificate, or other official dependency document.
  • For non-Americans returning to the USA, copy of green card or valid American visa allowing for re-entry into the USA.
  • For non-Americans without a green card or valid re-entry visa into the USA, valid visa to country of final destination after trip to Brazil. This requirement does not apply to applicants returning to country of citizenship.
  • A yellow fever vaccination certificate if applicant traveled within the last 90 days to any of the following countries: Angola, Bolivia, Benin, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Colombia, Democratic Republic of Congo, Ecuador, French Guiana, Gabon, Ghana, Gambia, Republic of Guinea, Liberia, Nigeria, Peru, Sierra Leone, Sudan or Venezuela.
    Please note that yellow fever vaccination is advisable if applicant's destination in Brazil is the Federal District (Brasilia), or any of the following States: Acre, Amapá, Amazonas, Goiás, Maranhão, Mato Grosso, Mato Grosso do Sul, Pará, Rondônia, Roraima, and Tocantins.
  • Once you have your protocol number, you must schedule an appointment online for “in person” visa document submission at this Consulate.

  • As applicable:
  • For activities under an international cooperation program – copy of the international agreement, proof of professional expertise, and a letter from sponsoring organization:
    1.    informing activities to be pursued by applicant;
    2.    attesting its responsibility for repatriation of the applicant (and his/her family, as applicable) once the visa expires or the agreement ceases to exist, and;
    3.    stating that the applicant will not receive any payment from a Brazilian party.
  • For professorial, research, or scientific activities – a letter from the Brazilian sponsoring organization informing activities to be pursued and pecuniary conditions, whenever applicable, and a copy of "Portaria" (Ordinance) that authorizes such research activities. Please note that:
    1. medical or dental volunteer services can only be provided once the proper authorization by a "Conselho Federal or Regional de Medicina is issued;
    2. the collection of biological and mineral material requires prior authorization by the "Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico - CNPq";
    3. carrying out activities in indigenous areas requires prior authorization from the "Fundação Nacional do Índio - FUNAI".
  • For exchange students
    1. A letter from school, college or university in Brazil confirming student’s enrollment or acceptance, and informing the duration of studies;
    2. parents' authorization (if applicant is under 18 years old);
    3. proof of financial capability to pay for the stay in Brazil;
    4. a letter from the sponsoring Brazilian exchange student program organization, stating the student's inclusion in the program, name and location of the educational institution, as well as the address/ names/ qualifications of responsible parties of "hosting family" in Brazil, and;
    5. copy of the Brazilian exchange student program organization bylaws, and its Cadastro Nacional de Pessoas Jurídicas.
  • For interns – a notarized copy of agreement ("termo de compromisso") between the intern and the Brazilian organization or institution, attesting to the conditions for internship, scholarship, and the required involvement of a Brazilian government agency, international cooperation organization, or authorized exchange organization (in this case, attach a copy of its bylaws, official registration, and Cadastro Nacional de Pessoas Jurídicas).
  • For medical treatment
    1. Affidavit by the patient’s doctor recommending the treatment in Brazil;
    2. Presentation of one of the following documents:
      • Proof of financial capability for the treatment and maintenance during stay in Brazil, or;
      • Copy of a Brazilian or international health insurance valid for the treatment in Brazil;
    3. Is the planned stay exceeds 90 days, a recent (not over 60 days) non-criminal record issued by the local (applicant's place of residence) Police Department.
      Please note that all documents received will be relayed to the Brazilian Ministry of External Relations for approval.
  • For technical training – a letter from employer attesting to the fact that applicant will not receive salary or payment of any kind by a Brazilian party, and a letter from the Brazilian corporation informing the nature of the training to be provided and attesting to the fact that it will be hold responsible for the applicant while in Brazil.
  • For athletic training
    1. parents' authorization, if applicant is under 18 years old;
    2. a recent (not over 60 days) non-criminal record issued by the local Police Department, if applicant is of criminally liable age;
    3. copy of birth certificate;
    4. copy of the agreement/contract between the American and the Brazilian organizations, and;
    5. a copy of document(s) attesting to the following: confirmation of training for applicant for a specified period, maintenance conditions, and guarantee of repatriation of applicant once the visa expires.
  • For community services and volunteering activities
    1. notarized copy of the identification page(s) (that must subsequently be legalized by this Consulate)
    2. notarized document proving applicant's professional experience or qualification compatible with activities to be carried out in Brazil (notarized document plus 1 photocopy);
    3. notarized letter of invitation issued by the Brazilian sponsoring organization, attesting to the conditions of the trip – pecuniary conditions, type of services to be provided, and locations where volunteering will be pursued (notarized document plus 1 photocopy);
    4. notarized written statement from the Brazilian sponsoring organization guaranteeing maintenance of volunteer in Brazil and his/her repatriation at term (notarized document plus 1 photocopy);
    5. notarized term of responsibility from the Brazilian sponsoring organization guaranteeing payment of all hospital and medical expenses of applicant and his/her dependents while staying in Brazil (notarized document plus 1 photocopy);
    6. notarized copy of Brazilian sponsoring organization by-laws;
    7. act in which the organization's directors were nominated, and proof that it is in existence (notarized documents plus 1 photocopy);
    8. notarized copy of the Brazilian sponsoring organization's registration at the "Conselho de Assistência Social" or whenever applicable, certificate qualifying as an organization of public interest issued by the Brazilian Ministry of Justice (notarized document plus 1 photocopy). Please note that all documents received will be relayed to the Brazilian Ministry of External Relations for approval.
  • Appropriate visa and legalization payments, as applicable.
  • All supporting documentation that is not originated in Brazil must be authenticated by the Consulate . Copy of Brazilian supporting documents must be notarized by a "Cartório" in Brazil.
